my reply to Dad Hyatt's counter points:

Our music leader (you can ask Tom) said "nothing is better than the priesthood" and that the song was like Superman as he was getting the boys excited to sing that song while we girls and women just sat there. He is also the exact same person who said (in my best friend in this ward's hearing) the thing about breastfeeding. So, firsthand and valid 2nd hand. And yet. (and yet). He is a very spiritually sensitive man doing a great job as the music leader in primary. Do I say something to him? Is he completely unaware how this might make women feel? His wife was my visiting teaching companion for two years and she is a great woman.

Are breast "genitals"? That bothers me. Maybe I need to read a basic anatomy book (I've taken two college courses, ten years apart in anatomy, and wouldn't that be significant if in my mind I reject that classification?). My own feelings about breasts have changed over my years of nursing, and somehow that just doesn't seem right to me.

If I get called to YW, I will teach them my Esther and Deborah songs, just as I have my 11 year old primary class.

YM can be interesting, that's for sure. I had my own experiences as a youth, and then watched it with my three daughters. The lesson I learned was that you can learn something from everyone -- even if what you learn is that people don't always get it right. Case in point: The YM leader who taught a Word of Wisdom lesson about healthy eating and made my overweight daughter and her overweight friend feel like crap. The very next week, that same YM leader brought the girls a box of Sees candy. Yeah, that went well. The lesson my daughter learned: People don't have a clue sometimes.

Don't fear YW; their critical thinking skills only improve with home discussion and clarification, so it actually gets easier than any Primary re-training. When my YW (16) came home Sunday feeling disgruntled about what she termed "Priesthood-holder Cheerleading", we had a fantastic discussion about the difference between the amazing blessings of the Priesthood (for everyone) and men who hold the Priesthood (many of whom are amazing, but some of whom are putzes.)

With foundational concepts in place at home, weirdness at church doesn't affect them as much. I still like to stir the pot and share those clarifying concepts in RS, though. I think my ward expects them, which is why I get asked to sub... so I can't heckle the sub.

Shannon,

you have good points, and I actually agree with your msg, though not all the possible unintended implications. Let me give some counterpoints:

-- I have never heard anyone ever say "nothing is better than the Priesthood"

-- I HAVE heard repeatedly: "God's greatest creation is woman"

-- I personally have never heard it said nor have I ever thought that breast feeding in public is gross.

-- I HAVE heard that some people have said that they think that breast feeding in public is gross. I'm pretty sure many women have said so, as well as men.

-- I think the grossest thing in public is "flashing" --IE a dirty old man exposing himself for shock value. This is light years away from breast feeding in public, though both are exposure of genitals. Think INTENT, PURPOSE, SELFISH vs GIVING, PERVERTED vs. HOLY, appropriate vs. criminal.

-- I have dealt w some adults w infantile attitudes toward genitals (during my Marine Corps Medical days). Their extremely immature, even perverted attitudes nonetheless point out that they (as many 7-8 years olds) inherently KNOW that there is someting special about genitals, and that we all, men, women, all ages, should be careful and repsectful. It is sad yet common that "natural men" and "natural women" sometimes pervert this care. But care is still warranted.

-- Both men's and women's bodies turn "gross" w age.

-- People who worship superficial appearence, youth, and beauty will be the saddest when (not if) they and their significant others age.

-- Being a mother IS IS IS the highest, most noble aspiration, and the fact that it seems to be contradicted by some statements or some people some times is further evidence. Attacks by evil and ignorant comments, attitudes, and trends show how significant it really is.

-- I pray that anyone who fears YW gets called to serve therein.
