Tom helped Avery with her project for the 5th Grade Science Fair. Her experiment, crumbling charcoal (volcanic ash) on a clear snare drum top and shining a light (the sun) to see if planetary temperatures are moderated by atmospheric insulation, was inspired by a book they both enjoyed:Mistborn.
And while father and daughter are talented in the literary, thrift-store and creating departments, I realized as I helped her prepare her presentation that neither of them had any idea of how the scientific method works.
Luckily, I do. And so she hit the sweet spot of the elementary school award system (recognition but no further effort required): Honorable Mention.

First of all, the picture is SO DANG AWESOME. What a beautiful intelligent young woman she is peering from behind those cute glasses.
Secondly, her project was AMAZINGLY CREATIVE that I can hardly stand it! Having judged many science projects – which tells you how desperate our district is for judges – I have NEVER run across one such as this! I would have more than “mentioned” it – of course, I may have been biased towards its literary merit. But undertaking the alchemy of MISTBORN is something else.
Loves to Avery and her ingenuous parents!
I love Mistborn and I’m dreading my sons 5th grade science project. We have no ideas yet AT ALL.
