They're really not that bad, especially with the first kid, but they do get worse the more kids you have (at least in my experience. It's when the uterus is contracting to get back to its normal size, and they're usually triggered by breastfeeding. They only last a few days. (don't let THAT keep you from having kids -- I'm sure there are much better reasons not to procreate :P).
