I convinced my husband not to swap gifts on Valentines. Our anniversary was almost an afterthought. Almost forgot my own birthday last year. But for some reason Mother’s Day is a big deal to me. I’m not sure why. My husband knows he can’t slack on that holiday. (And do you realize you used your daughter’s real name? Took me a second to figure out which one you were talking about)
Which is why I wondered if I should do something for mother’s day for girls activity day at church… I couldn’t decide if it was the expected activity for mothers day week, or if I was free to choose. What it came down to though was I had nothing planned and I am back to working at the flower shop this week, carnation bud vases it is…
Working in the floral industry it is interesting to see how different this holiday is in comparison to Valentine’s. Did you know that 99% of the time it is okay for mom to get flowers even up to 5 days early, whereas, if someone’s Valentine roses are delivered the day before there is no hope for saving the relationship? And comparing the amount of time spent choosing the gifts… what is the meaning of this rose color or that? what secret meaning if I buy her a purple iris? a lily? I guess mom is more forgiving than the wife/girlfriend. Though my favorite part of all of it, is when they spend huge amounts of time & money (for either holiday) choosing just the right bouquet of flowers and then the card is the afterthought. When people ask me what to write on the card and I give them a few suggestions and they just say “yeah, that sounds good.” I always tell them “at least it came from the heart” (note, sarcasm) Seriously people, the flowers are going to be around a week, but if the recipient is all sentimental (mom), or romantic (wife/girlfriend) the card (with the florist’s heartfelt message) will be around in a journal or memento box for years to come.
LOL, I love that look on her face!! So cute!
That’s so funny about the “florist’s heartfelt message.” I once was thinking how tacky it was that a blogger had posted this long love letter from her husband, but now that I think how rare and precious those kinds of things are, no wonder she was so proud of it, and so eager to share with the world!
And, sounds like a great activity days craft. Girls that age (my Sally is
are so loving and eager to do that kind of fun thing for their moms.
Oops. Changed the name — thanks.
I’m not really big on gifts (I actually love practical stuff that I just haven’t felt I could affort yet, and special foods, etc), but I do get frustrated when the appropriate attention is not paid!
