With a recommendation like that, I am adding it too goodreads to-read now. Sounds right up my alley.

One of my favorite things about the book was how the author refused to pigeonhole the narrator as a tomboy. She was good at both "male" and "female" tasks. Even though she had a pretty traditional role in life as a wife and mother, her father and her brothers and her husband allowed/encouraged her to develop her other talents. I loved a scene towards the end where Jack takes the boys fishing so the women can have girl time, and for girl time they take a picnic to the outskirts of town and Sarah starts teaching April how to shoot, and then they do some embroidery work.

Reprieve is the perfect word -- exactly what I was hoping for for her, but I definitely saw it coming. Even though it still makes me anguished for Sarah.

I don't know when I'll pick up the sequel. Need to process this one for awhile I think. And now there is a third (and final) book.

Thanks Beth. I don't know if "delicious" is the right word, but it was certainly refreshing.

Historical, and "based on a true story" books seldom have much appeal for me too. My sister has been recommending this one to me for a long time. LHOTP is written for children, and TIMW is definitely for adults, but I highly recommend both.

I read this one a few years back for book club and it was excellent. In addition to being adventurous and exciting, the romance was sweet. It is an amazingly good book.

I read this book a couple years ago and probably should re-read it and then pick up the sequel. I remember being devastated emotionally by all the main character goes through. And after so much through the first parts, you expect her to have a reprieve, but life doesn't always work that way. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. Especially in the Arizona desert!

Wow... that's moving.

And I was also wondering where you had been, I'm glad you were well and having a vacation (if you'd call camping a vacation, it IS a lot of work). :)

I need that kind of book right now. I hope my library has it. By the way, welcome back! I told myself that if you weren't back by now I was going to start a full scale Jane search. But here you are.

LOVE that book. I cried and was thankful for my life throughout much of the book. I fell in love with Sarah and her strengths and her faults, though they were few in my eyes. Thanks for sharing, I too have been trying to get everyone I know to read this book. "Sarah's Quilt," the sequel, is also good, I prefer "These is My Words."

Let me be the first to welcome you back. We missed you, although a week camping is always delicious.

I must admit that the pioneer time period has never held any allure for me. Lately though, several people have been pressing me to read the Little House on the Prairie series. You do make this book sound awfully good so perhaps I should give it a shot.

Currently I'm reading "The Three Musketeers" and "The Case For Christ". I need to get those done before I move on, but I'll add this one to the list.
