*sigh* Are the performers truly performing for you or for themselves? Do we write for the readers or for ourselves? I would still write whether anybody read it or not - it is just nice knowing somebody does. My husband often says that he loves his job and that the secret is that he would do it even if people didn't pay him. So yes, it is worth it, because we don't really do it for others.

What a beautiful and moving post. As I was reading it, I actually did not hear my kids screaming in the background. It is so worth it. Not because of us, but because of Him. Longfellow got it. The prophet Isaiah got it. Even a current guy like Jeremy Camp gets it (he lost his first wife to cancer a few months after they married, and he has gone on to write wonderful songs). You have a God-given gift, and you are sharing it, as He intended.

God bless you and your lovely family! Merry Christmas!!

think of generations that hear Longfellow's poetry and the hymn made from it, think of the millions who will see and hear the PBS broadcast of what you attended. Think of the impact your blogging will have on your children and their children and on and on. Yes! It is worth it.

I think that just performing for the sublime moments would be a really poor motivation for all of that practice and preparation. I think people who continue to do things like that enjoy the process, or at least parts of the process. I really enjoy cooking and it's not just that amazing first bite, or amazing meal that drives me. I really enjoy those things, but just the process of trying something new, figuring out how recipes work, and seeing the final project are enough. It also helps when people ooh and aah over it, but still. I think if it's something you like doing the motivations for doing it include preparing it.

It is worth it. Because without it {art, or the striving toward art} what are we?

It's worth it because even if your art isn't heralded by the masses, it makes your heart happy. It makes your heart satisfied.

The dishes and the driving and the fingernail clipping and the bedtimes do eventually fade into the background as life passes. Should we ignore one for the other? No. But I think if eeking away a few minutes to write or create while in these years of utter chaos keeps you sane and brings you joy, then it's more than worth it.

Because you {we} are more than worth it, right?

Merry Christmas, Jane.
