If you’re looking for a quick, leave-a-comment-and-win-a-toaster-cozy post, scootch on back to Bloggy Giveaways and try your luck. (GOOD LUCK!)
What we have here is a chance to win a $25 giftcard to the online store of your choice in exchange for a few minutes of your time and some constructive criticism.
But first, a short quiz:
Tacky or Not?
1) Requiring people to subscribe to your feed to enter a giveaway.
2) Requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment to enter a giveaway.
3) Throwing out all entries that don’t include the words “thank you for the giveaway” in the comment.
4) Holding giveaways in the first place.
5) Using spit to clean the baby’s face. (your spit). (in public).
And another quiz, though this one is more open-answer:
Which type of post do you prefer?
A) Dear Sally, Grandma Thinks You’re Autistic, and She Can’t Stop Talking About It
B) Molten Lava Cakes: 5 Ingredients to Chocolate Bliss
Go check them out. I’ll wait. There’s a link back to this post (HELP WANTED) at the top of each of these.
Tell me your Tacky or Not answers and which type of post you prefer (and why), and you’ll be eligible to win the 25 dollar giftcard. (Don’t forget to leave your email address so I can contact you if you win!)
Thanks!
Updated: The contest is now over. I’d still love your feedback, but the winner of the $25 gift card is commenter #15, Kathleen. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!

Okay the 3rd one throwing out all comments that say thank you for the giveaway. I hold giveaways on my blog and it actually kind of annoys me when I see a thank you for the giveaway. It looks like butt kissing to me and obviously you are happy there is a giveaway you are entering!
The second question I’m sure exactly what each post means but Shoot yourself in the foot sounds most interesting to me.

1) tacky but I’ve done it.
2) depends on what they are asking, if it’s a memory or something not tacky but a three page essay on giveaways yes lol.
3) not tacky, I agree with the first comment it seems like abutt kissing lol.
4) not tacky.
5) Just gross lol
and I picked story b, mainly because I know how it feels to go about with life and then to get hit with a brick wall like you guys did with your mom (which I’m glad to read it went fine) as we had that happen with my grandma. Last christmas we were laughing/talking and not really paying attention to her holding her sides or wincing extra hard if she bumped it….in January she got diagnosed with cancer, it started in her bones. She started chemo in February and then started to get better in march, in april it was so bad she was on a morphine pump and not allowed to go home. She got to come home april 28th and passed away may 2nd of this year. It’s still a bit hard to take in but it takes time. Plus that recipe looks AWESOME.
(sorry to get all long lol.)

1) Not tacky as long as it only counts for an extra entry.
2) Not tacky – isn’t the internet all about thoughtful interaction
3) Not tacky – it’s just basic etiquette & good manners to say thank you
4) Totally tacky – who on earth would pimp their blog by holding giveaways. Blog are just supposed to be a place to let your own voice be heard & to bolster up women around you (in cyberspace)
5) Only tacky if someone sees you.
I worship everything you write, Jane. I had wallpaper made with quotes from your blog & put it up in my bedroom. I thank the Lord for you every night. You are the awesomest blogger to ever post words in the blogosphere. Thank you so much, forever & ever, for the giveaway. I hope I win! I’m off to stumble every post you ever even thought about writing.

Tacky or Not?
1) I honestly think that’s kind of tacky, because you know that after that one time, noone is actually going to follow the subscription. Well, maybe some do.
2) I think it depends on what is being given away…
3) I think that’s tacky, but at the same time, I think that the people entering should thank the person holding the giveaway.
4) Heck no! Giveaways are AWESOME!
5) OMG, tacky doesn’t even begin to describe that. My husband does that to our daughter and it grosses me out!
I am going to go with story B. It was a very sweet story, plus I’ve made the microwave cake too, except in a coffee mug. Although, Story D totally sounds like something I woulds say in a phone convo with my friend!

5) mom sit will shine clean toxic waste! And it’s my kid mind your own business.

I think that requiring people to subscribe to your feed to enter a giveaway is definitely tacky, but requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment is not.
also using spit to clean a baby’s face is probably tacky, but I am guilty of doing it anyway!
“Which type of post do you prefer?”
I read all of those posts, and then I kept reading. I did subscribe to your blog and I think I will truly enjoy reading it. I connect most with mom’s who write on a variety of subjects. I love something about each of those posts and of the many other post I read.

Tacky or Not?
1) Requiring people to subscribe to your feed to enter a giveaway. A bit annoying considering most of them will unsubscribe after they don’t win! BUT…I’m not above using it on my own blog! LOL!
2) Requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment to enter a giveaway. This shouldn’t be required, it should just happen, but it doesn’t, always, so I don’t think it’s tacky to ask for something real.
3) Throwing out all entries that don’t include the words “thank you for the giveaway” in the comment. Tacky.
4) Holding giveaways in the first place. Not. Love ‘em!
5) Using spit to clean the baby’s face. (your spit). (in public). LOL! Not so much tacky…at times quite necessary! Always mildly amusing!
As for my favorite kind of post, well I have to vote for the molten lava cake post, because I’m a food blog junkie and I love recipes and food stories, but there is no denying the the short, sweet, succinct, and beautiful humor in the Shoot Yourself in the Foot post not only made me laugh, but it made me curious about what other fun stories may come from your family! 1) Requiring people to subscribe to your feed to enter a giveaway. — Tacky. I never subscribe because I don’t feel it’s honest to subscribe just for a giveaway. During giveaways I don’t spend a lot of time deciding if blogs are right for me or not, but I do check back when I have more time if I get a “Thanks for entering my giveaway” e-mail or a “Sorry, but you didn’t win” e-mail…
2) Requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment to enter a giveaway. — Not Tacky. I think it’s interesting and it makes my chances of winning better since others are so quick to not follow the rules and post a “Pick me!” comment! lol…
3) Throwing out all entries that don’t include the words “thank you for the giveaway” in the comment. Tacky — I haven’t heard of that, but sometimes you’re thankful, but forget to say it. Let me say “Thanks for the giveaway” so I don’t forget later! lol…
4) Holding giveaways in the first place. — Not tacky. Celebrating is always fun and so are giveaways!
5) Using spit to clean the baby’s face. (your spit). (in public). Not tacky — super practical in a pinch! I leave my kiddo with a messy face unless he’s about to have his picture taken or something crucial like meeting a distinguished public figure for the first time! Then I might resort to spit, but always on a napkin — never directly on my child’s face. lol…
I read all four posts and have to say I liked them all, but lean more towards A or C because I love pics and stories about kiddos. Glad to hear your daughter is not autistic and your mom is not offended…
PS: Thanks for the giveaway!

2) Depends – sometimes a comment is called for.
3) Thank you’s are courteous, but should be up to the responder – Tacky to throw out the ones who forget their manners.
4) Absolutely NOT tacky – a good way to revive the old blog sometimes
5) Sometimes it’s all you’ve got – what’s a mom to do?
As for Part 2, I like all of your posts. No, I’m not up to stalking you – I just like your humor. I enjoyed the challenges of MMSM, even though I also enjoyed moaning and groaning about it, too! I vote that you bring that back.

Re: tackiness – meh. I have no opinion on that list.
I’m generally not fond of giveaways since they are time-dependent and I like to think of blogs as “timeless.” Would you be surprised to read about a giveaway by an author in a book you bought? (In the middle of “A Christmas Carol”: Dickens says “I’m having tea and crumpets with my fans this afternoon, send me some mail and one lucky attendee will get a free copy of my book.”)
In any case, it seems like an odd way to get readers/traffic, since they have to already read your blog to know about the contest. Maybe its good at reader retention, I don’t know.
I have seen giveaways to be effective in getting people to move to another communication type (e.g. on a podcast: “follow me in twitter to win a new phone”), but that only works when you already have their ear.
Re: types of posts.
Please no recipe posts; there are food/recipe blogs enough in the world, some by famous chefs even.
I think one ought to do photo caption posts only if the photo is available in the RSS feed (which is where I read 100% of my blog subscriptions). A blank feed entry or some text that looks totally out of context is annoying. All the other ones are fine.
Just my $.02.
[Reply]
I don’t really think any of them are tacky. To each their own. I think everyone does the spit thing, lol.
But to all of your bloggy contest holders who think saying thank you is butt kissing – please judge that based on each individual entry. i ALWAYS say thank you. that is just the type of person I was raised to be, and I promise I am not doing it for brownie points. I just like to show respect. So it’s rude not to say thank you, but butt kissing to say thank you? Either way we cant please ya!
lol.
As for the titles, I like the Molten Lava Cakes one, for obvious reasons!
oh, and i say this without shame or intent….Thank you!

Tacky or Not?
1) Requiring people to subscribe to your feed to enter a giveaway. Yes. But letting them know it’s an option is not.
2) Requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment to enter a giveaway. No, but people are always going to look for the path of least resistance. There will always be those who just want you to “Give it to me”
3) Throwing out all entries that don’t include the words “thank you for the giveaway” in the comment. No. Why would that DQ you?
4) Holding giveaways in the first place.No. Everyone loves a freebie.
5) Using spit to clean the baby’s face. (your spit). (in public).Yes. That is just nasty. However, You can allow the dog to lick the baby clean in an emergency.

I like C and D. I like reading about others’ take on things, I love unexpected humor and a touch of irony thrown in for good measure.

Tacky or Not?
1) Requiring people to subscribe to your feed to enter a giveaway. A bit…I feel I would just resentful of “having” to read your blog and wind up throwing it all away.
2) Requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment to enter a giveaway. Nope…you’re handing out money, make us work for it!
3) Throwing out all entries that don’t include the words “thank you for the giveaway” in the comment. Not tacky, but some of us say thank you in different ways
4) Holding giveaways in the first place No, I love em!
5) Using spit to clean the baby’s face. (your spit). (in public). No, it’s nature’s oxi clean.
And my fave kind of post is the “look at what my kids did and I’m posting it so I don’t kill them”. Love how they’re just standing there looking at it, like “oh, so that’s what happens.”

1) Requiring people to subscribe to your feed to enter a giveaway. – as the only way to enter yes.. tacky. However if this is for extra entries… great!
2) Requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment to enter a giveaway. Yes because it’s your hard work writing it up, so this is not tacky.
3) Throwing out all entries that don’t include the words “thank you for the giveaway” in the comment. that’s tacky… I mean it’s nice to say thank you, I think because I do reviews and giveaways and it takes a lot of time, I appreciate a good thank you, but to throw entries out that don’t thank, no need! 1. If it’s for an extra entry. Not that tacky. You can always unsubscribe a few weeks later. (Though unsubscribing might make you feel tacky.)
2. Not tacky. I like it when giveaways ask you to answer a question of some sort. It kind of takes you off the hook.
3. That would be tacky. I do NOT think it’s tacky to say please and thank you. Entries have to say something after all, and there’s nothing wrong with being polite. I can’t understand why are folks here saying that it annoys them to read comments that do say thanks. It’s not kissing but. Since 90% or so of contests are selected by random drawing of numbers.
4. I do like giveaways. I don’t think they’re tacky at all.
5. Embarrassing, maybe. Tacky, slightly. But sometimes it’s necessary.

hahaha! Even if I don’t win, that was pretty funny.
1-4: I don’t know, I think it really depends on the person and the reasons for the giveaway. I don’t think most bloggers do it for the “oh my gosh! increased traffic! I’m so popular I’m going to faint and wake up back in junior high!!!” kicks.
as for the spit (5), not tacky at all. Though in time, that will be gross. My grandma still likes to do it for her grandchildren (which would be my brother and I, ages 15 and 19 respectively). As long as they can’t protest, spit-clean away.
I liked the Shooting Yourself in the Foot. It’s always good to be able to take a really frustrating situation and turn it into a laughing matter. I don’t mind serious posts which make me learn something, or require more emotional and mental input, but when I’m not really familiar with a blogger, it’s the funnies that make me want to continue reading. If this was a very serious somber blog I probably wouldn’t read it if it wasn’t written by a close friend or relative.
Just my two cents.

Here I am, on my way to winning-dom, clicking on my 1100-something giveaway, looking for a quick comment=cozy when I have to stop. And actually read some posts. You. are. brilliant. I have now been stuck on whataboutmom for close to an hour, looked at the clock and thought, what am I doing? Am I supposed to be doing something right now? It’s like pulling my head out of a good book and trying to stretch my way back into reality. I don’t know what exactly it is about your blog but I honestly feel like I was just sneaking a peek at your diary. On every post I wanted to leave a comment but I physically couldn’t because I felt like I would be intruding. I didn’t want to be some weirdo no name stranger from bloggygiveawayland leaving my one dimensional lame-o comments. So instead I’m writing a novel on this post.
Now, this is going to sound ultra weird but reading your blog has actually changed me. I started blogging in Jan but my blogs have been boring, I have a family one (basically sweet family) that only special people see and my other that can only really fit into the one category you missed: junk drawer. Hey, maybe I’ll rename it that…. Anyway, I’ve been afraid to share my inner self. You are my inspiration.
Okay, blah blah blah, here is my constructive criticism (because a $25 gift card would be nice and I’m cheap and want free stuff):
Question 1:
1. Tacky. (After reading your first post I wanted to anyway but I don’t want to HAVE to)
2. NOT
3. Tacky (if you don’t want politeness[aka butt kissin]then tell them so)
4. NOT (what’s wrong with free stuff?)
5. NOT (sometimes there’s no other option, ya know?)
Question 2:
My answer is E) All of the Above. Including closing the screen door, cleaning poop out of the tub, your beautiful neck, your ex-BIL and too sweet for words sister, your grandma, your aunt and uncle who never stopped loving you for a moment, the cheese colored couch (which is a mess my kids can top on a daily basis), your ADD and Autistic daughters, and the list goes on and will go on.
Soooo…..I’m making that molten lava cake tonight. I’ve been craving chocolate anyway so thanks for the recipe. Also, if you ever write a book let me know because I’ll buy it. (I mean this sincerely, no butt smoochin involved) Oh, and one more thing…..
Thank you for the giveaway! (no really, I meant it)

A gift should be just that… Although I definitely think Thank You cards are polite and a very good thing to do, it irks me to no end when people give a gift expecting a Thank You card. Okay, dismounting soap box.
4) Not Tacky- people love giveaways!
5) Not Tacky- often a necessity.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO someone who honestly wants my opinion.
OK I think its tacky to ask someone to subscribe to your feed, does anyone honestly believe it will keep someone interested because they are required, i have participated in lots of giveaways and only a few people actually ever come back i don’t give to get i give because it makes me feel good,
what i find tasteless in those that only deliver to US addresses, its the internet for goodness sake, i saw one lady who said she would pay whatever it took her to mail within the US and anything over that the winner would be required to pay for NOW that was a good idea. OK more information than you asked for.
I would like the choco post, i mean choco is grand right>

1) I don’t like having to subscribe to feed. most sites i bookmark, i don’t like being told “you have to”
2) Asking people to pay attention to what you want, and put a little thought into what they are saying isn’t asking too much. After all, our reason for visiting a blog is to read thoughts, ideas, insperations, etc. what would your blog be if it read… “this is a great page. Thanks you for visiting”
3) No entries should be tossed out unless they didn’t abide by your posting rules.
4) Giveaways are exciting.
5) My spit in kids face…. YES… do it all the time… don’t like it, don’t look…. rather my spit on their face, than their “deposits” stuck to my skin while changing a diaper! haha

Yes
2) Requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment to enter a giveaway.
No.
3) Throwing out all entries that don’t include the words “thank you for the giveaway” in the comment.
Don’t know if it is tacky but odd…
4) Holding giveaways in the first place.

1) Yes. Because even though I’m all technical and whatever, I haven’t subscribed to anyone’s feed. So if I don’t do it, it’s tacky.
2) Hm, not tacky. Overly type-A standards, perhaps?
3) No.
4) Only if you’re giving away tacky stuff.
5) Isn’t this the total pre-requisite to being a Real Mum (TM)? It just shows how loving and caring you are, right?
Re the posts, I like ‘em all (such a picky reader). Probably the one that was least captivating personally was C. I’m not American, and I feel ashamed to admit that I just don’t *get* Mac & Cheese. I *get* spaghetti bolognaise, but not Mac & Cheese.

Actually, I don’t think any of those first four are tacky, people get to make the rules on their own blogs. I am totally guilty of using spit to wipe dried toothpaste and other crud off my daughter’s face. I need to work on that, or carry a wipe with me at all times.
Any mention of cakes or chocolates gets big points in my world!

Tacky or Not?
1) Not tacky. Well, maybe a bit. But hey, giveaways are a marketing scheme, so chill.
2) Totally not tacky. I think dashing through 1300 blogs with a “Pick me!” is a little on the skeezy side.
3) Less tacky than lame and controlling and Hitleresque.
4) Fabulous!
5) An absolute must.
As for the posts, I read all of them and liked all of them. The mix is what works for me: some recipes, some kid love, some family talk, some philosophy. You’re a brilliant writer, and your family is swell, too, so just do your thing.
I will, however, say that in my Internet-addled mind I tend to prefer shorter posts to longer. But I was dying to know about your aunt and uncle, and the ending was worth the wait.
[Reply]
Tacky or not:
1) absolutely. It’s obvious self-promotion. (Not that there’s anything wrong with self-promotion, just that one ought to be more subtle about it.
2) no. I like encouraging people to put a little thought into asking for free stuff.
3) yes. If you’re giving stuff away, why be picky about that sort of thing? In any case, I’d be more offended at people who don’t say thank you upon winning.
4) no. Share the wealth!
5) no. A dirty, snotty kid face is much more embarrassing than a spit bath.
I like post D) the best. That is a brilliant piece of writing. Why are so many commenters saying they liked B the best? It’s just a recipe for goodness sake. You could get the same enjoyment out of Betty Crocker.

Tacky or Not?
1) I don’t think it’s tacky, but sometimes I won’t enter a giveaway if it requires me to subscribe to a feed (yes, I realize that is tacky on my part). I don’t really like feeds, probably because I still don’t understand them completely, so I bookmark blogs and check in every few days.
2) Definitely not tacky!
3) Tacky. I don’t always say thank you, but I very much appreciate giveaways. Just because people say thanks doesn’t mean they are really more thoughtful. I have to admit, I saw on a lot of carnival posts somebody who PASTED the same thing on every giveaway. It was very obvious and I thought that was really tacky that they couldn’t even take the time to share their thoughts with the blogger giving away prizes!
4) Not tacky at all!
5) Better than having them covered in food looking like a cave-baby.
I prefer post C because I like visual pictures and it was short and simple. Sometimes I don’t have a lot of time to sit and read a really long blog post.
Thank you for the giveaway.
[Reply]
Tacky or Not?
1. I personally do not enter a giveaway if someone wants me to subscribe to their feed. I don’t know if I think it is tacky, but I dislike when people ask that as a requirement. I don’t mind if they want to include that option for extra entries.
2. The thoughtful comment…I’m torn on this one. Again, I don’t think it is tacky. It is your blog and your giveaway and you can require whatever you want. If people don’t like it, they don’t have to enter. However, in something like THIS bloggy giveaway, where there were over 1000 giveaways listed in the first day, it is difficult to leave a thoughtful comment on every post and sometimes it is nice to just find one that says, “Leave a comment, any comment.” On my blog, I actually like reading what others have to say on a topic, so I can see why people don’t want to approve 500 messages that say, “Pick me!”
3. I guess that could be tacky. I am always thankful for the giveaway and often say so, but if I have had to go and answer other stuff and jump around to other websites, I don’t always tag a thank you on my answer.
4. Not tacky. I love the giveaways. Thanks so much for hosting one!
5. Yeah. I find that tacky, but who am I to say. I wouldn’t do it even if it wasn’t in public.
I enjoyed your post on Molten Lava Cakes, simply because we are kindred spirits in that respect. I posted my recipe for Molten Lava Cakes when I made them for Christmas a year ago. My mouth still waters when I think about them. I wonder if I have any chocolate in the house?
Thanks again for the giveaway! (Is that tacky to thank you two times for the same giveaway? grin!)
[Reply]
Tacky or Not?
1) Requiring people to subscribe to your feed to enter a giveaway. Why of course not how else do you get people to subscribe?
2) Requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment to enter a giveaway.
Well that would mean the readers would actually have to have a thought and since mine do they write better than me so NO. I don’t need the competition.
3) Throwing out all entries that don’t include the words “thank you for the giveaway” in the comment.
Absolutley. and by the way have I said Thanks for the Give away?
4) Holding giveaways in the first place.
Oh I think everyone should give away as long as I win the give aways
5) Using spit to clean the baby’s face. (your spit). (in public).
Since scientific research confirms Mommy spit is the best and only all purpose baby face cleaner. My answer is it is perfectly acceptable in fact encouranged.
Which type of post do you prefer?
A) Dear Sally, Grandma Thinks You’re Autistic, and She Can’t Stop Talking About It
Since this reminds me of a story my daughter told me I really like this.
B) Molten Lava Cakes: 5 Ingredients to Chocolate Bliss
You can never go wrong with chocolate
C) Shooting Yourself in the Foot
since I do this all the time well this is good too
D) I’d Gaze at My Navel, But Have You Seen That Thing?
Um I can’t see my naval.
So I choose Z all of the above!
[Reply]
1) Tacky if it’s a _requirement_. Not tacky if it’s an extra chance.
2) Not tacky
3) I think it’s kinda tacky to require thanks. I mean, especially with the Bloggy Giveaways carnival, we’re all in this together. We’re all thankful for all the cool stuff we could win. We’re all thankful for the effort put in by Melanie and all the giveaway hosts. I think thanks are kind of implied here.
4) Not usually tacky…sometimes self-promotion bothers me, but that’s just me. It’s probably a great way to increase sales. I’m just not a salesperson at all.
5) Not tacky. Kinda gross (even though I’d _totally_ do it), but not tacky.
and I think I’d pick D just from the titles.

1) Tacky (although I can rationalize it; I’m already subscribed, but it’s easy to unsubscribe, too, of course, if someone wanted to just sign up for a giveaway.)
2) Depends on the nature of the post. This is fine; social issues, probably tacky, but they don’t have many giveaways, either

4) Nah.
5) No, but I thought so before I had one of my own, LOL.
Favorite kind of post: A. But it’s a tough call. Your blog is about life. (Not, say, life and financial advice and international politics.) And life throws a lot of things your way! Not everyone can relate to everything that happens to us, but someone can relate to each thing.

2) Not tacky, but this bloggy carnival? I don’t expect it.
3) Kinda extreme. Although I usually say thanks, just because I have to have something to say.
4) not at all.
5) tacky? {shrug} it’s a parental right
I like all your posts. Not so much the chocolate one, just because I don’t cook a lot. But really, I like variety. There are some blogs I read that are focused so much on one thing, that I see all the insight into parenting and raising kids, but I don’t feel like I actually get to know who the blogger is at all. They’re too abstract. I don’t know if that makes any sense at all though.

2. Not tacky. Hubby and I have fun with some of them where you have to be creative.

4. in the same vein as answer one, although it’s a bit ironic that I am going to be subscribing because of this giveaway.
5. I used to think so but now I realize that kids, especially mine can be pigs!
To be honest I got through the first two posts before little man started crying for lunch, so I’m hurriedly typing this now. I was immediately drawn to the title: Dear Sally, Grandma Thinks You’re Autistic, and She Can’t Stop Talking About It. It tells a story in and of itself and it’s funny (since clearly you don’t feel the same–autism is not particularly funny). I think homeschooling is attractive until you get ready to do it and it’s this huge commitment of lesson plans and supplementing and giving up that time where she’s gone. By the way, this post had my vote for the Chairman Mao reference alone!

Let the games begin.
1. I don’t think tacky is a good description, but being required to sign up is a bit much. People only have so much time to devote to their lives as it is…no need to keep filling up the ever-increasing amount of stuff in people’s inboxes.
2. You have to read the comments…feel free to request what you would like to read.
3. Throwing out all of the entries because someone doesn’t say thank you…that doesn’t sound right. BTW, thank you for letting me comment in order to possibly win a giftcard in your giveaway. lol
4. This is my first time to enter the blog giveaways, so I am uncertain at this moment on how I feel about them. I’m sure if I win, I will give you a thumbs up though. ; )

1 & 3 are tacky. Even if people subscribe to your feed to be entered, they might just unsub when they don’t win, and you’ll have gained nothing. I’m not too worried about the lack of thank you’s in giveaway entries, what bugs me more is obvious form responses that they copy and paste for everyone.
2 & 4 are a good way to get the word out about your blog or product, and 5 is something every mom does…I’ve heard that mom spit is the world’s best cleanser
I personally liked Dear Sally the best, since I homeschool, and agonize daily over the decision, and sometimes long to drop them off at school and have some “me time”. My youngest is a “sit next to me, kiss my arm, and distract others” child as well.
As for I’d Gaze at My Navel, I definitely see your point about needing to find your voice, and struggling to get there. At one point, I had 4 blogs (1 was mommy/humor, 1 was reading, 1 was movies, and 1 was knitting). After a lot of introspection, I dropped them all except reading, since that’s what I love the most, and I had a hard time trying to come up with something interesting or funny every day for the mommy/humor blog. I’m happy just reviewing books, even though I have only one or two sporadic readers, I finally feel like I am blogging for me.

2. people SHOULD write something meaningful. Man, I’m into capitalizations today. it’s boring to read “please enter me.” (oh–and please enter my giveaway, by the way. ahem)
3. see answer #2
4. giveaways are fun
5. i don’t have any kids (so i probably won’t win this giveaway), but i do wipe the eye snot out of my dogs’ eyes with my fingers. i’m sure that grosses people out. it’s normal to me. i’m their mother!
3.
post #1, because it’s funny as all get out and i like making lists (like #1, #2). i’m a list-blogger myself.

eh, its your giveaway, you make the rules. One mans tacky is another mans thought-provoking. As for the thank you, you can’t force manners, if you threw out those entries, would the people even know you did it? Or is it just a personal satisfaction thing?
A food post will always gather my attention the longest. That molten lava cake looks fairly simple, I can’t believe there are only 5 ingredients.
Thanks for the giveaway, he he

As for the posts: I’m partial to the Molten Lava Cake one because although I like to look for recipes online – I prefer to get them from places like blogs where a real human can tell me just how difficult things are to make, how tasty the result is, & if the ends justify the means.
As for your tacky questions:
Tacky or Not?
1) subscription requirements: I don’t like it when that’s your only option, but I don’t mind doing it if it’s just an extra thing
2) thoughtful comments – I have no problem with this at all, who wouldn’t prefer a comment that actually showed that someone read the post rather than that they just know how to scroll to the bottom of the page.
3) tossing comments because they don’t say thank you? thats ridiculous!
4) holding giveaways is a fun way to attract attention to a blog or site – why not?!!?
5) ahh the spit. I’m only 24 & have no kids, but my best friend & I have been known to do this to one another. Does it bother people? I don’t know. Probably, but I don’t care. Why don’t I care? “Because those who mind don’t matter & those who matter don’t mind.” – Dr Seuss.
Hope some of this is helpful! and be well!!
ps: Thanks so much for hosting the giveaway lol *wink*

Hmm I couldn’t stop drooling after reading B, so I’ll pick that one;)

I’m not sure what the difference is in the post types exactly…but I loved the humor of the c) shooting yourself in the foot post.
1) Slightly tacky, I prefer it being an option for an additional entry.
2) Not tacky at all, I do it too.
3) Tacky. If you don’t tell people they have to say thank you, you shouldn’t throw out their entries if they don’t do it.
4) Not tacky at all.
5) My vote is for not tacky since everyone does it.

2. not tacky–why argue with the lady holding the giveaway?
3. tacky–totally uncool, ms. crankypants.
4. so not tacky–this is like my hobby, so sad.
5. not tacky–hey, you share genetic information with the kid.
A gets my vote. I so get it! I love my boy, but I can’t wait for him to be in school. His teacher is fantastic, therefore I feel less guilt about palming him off to strangers.

I don’t think any of the items in the tacky or not list are tacky. As for the spit, my Mom did it to me, I did it to my kids, and now both I and my kids are doing it to my grandkids. No one has died yet.
As for the type of posts….honestly, I find all of them interesting. I think it’s the writing style that hooks people, maybe more so than the topic. I loved them all and am subscribing so I can read more. As for Dooce….I use to read her and I found her amusing, but after a while I did get annoyed and her whining got to me. I had to leave. As for PW…at first I read her every day and enjoyed it. But really there’s not enough there to keep me interested every day. It’s like watching the same show over and over with only slight variations. So she’s still bookmarked and I take a peek now and then, but am not a full-timer.

Tacky or Not?
1) Requiring people to subscribe to your feed to enter a giveaway.
Yes, but only because I hate subscribing to blogs, that’s what bookmarks are for.
2) Requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment to enter a giveaway.
Not Tacky
3) Throwing out all entries that don’t include the words “thank you for the giveaway” in the comment.
Tacky, unless it is specified in the rules that you have to say thank you
4) Holding giveaways in the first place.
Not tacky
5) Using spit to clean the baby’s face. (your spit). (in public).
Gross, but not Tacky, my dad used to clean my face with Coffee at restaurants so I’m not that fazed by it. (it was like, DAD WATER IS RIGHT THERE!)
And another quiz, though this one is more open-answer:
Which type of post do you prefer?
A) Dear Sally, Grandma Thinks You’re Autistic, and She Can’t Stop Talking About It
because it was funny and told me a bit about your views
Thanks for the giveaway!

2) Hmm…I don’t mind this too much.
3) Yes, tacky!!!
4) Noooooooooooo not tacky.
5) Erm…a mom’s gotta do what she’s gotta do!
i prefer the molten lava cake post because i love to bake and have saved that recipe for making next week!

Tacky or Not?
1-4. no, not tacky although I wouldn’t subscribe to a feed just for an additional entry- unless it was a lifetime supply of chocolate LOL!
5. Yes, tacky, but I do it anyway. When there’s a lack of water and a need for a clean face!!
The post I prefer is the molten chocolate cake- hands down!!! Why? Well first I love to cook, second- OH MY GOODNESS DOES THAT LOOK GOOD!!!!!
(Thank you for the giveaway!)

Quiz 1:
1. Tacky 2. Not 3. Tacky 4. Not 5. I sure hope not because I do this one rather often
Quiz 2: B — Did you not see the picture of the chocolate oozing out goodness? Need I go on?
[Reply]
Good quiz. Here are my answers:
Tacky or Not?
1) I don’t think you should require people to subscribe to your feed to enter a giveaway, but you should offer an extra entry (or 2 or 3) for doing it.
2) Requiring people to leave an actual, thought-ful comment to enter is fine (I do that) – but don’t require a book!
3) Throwing out all entries that don’t include the words “thank you for the giveaway” in the comment is tacky unless you specifically state it as a requirement in the rules.
4) Holding giveaways is NOT tacky!
5) Using spit to clean the baby’s face is fine unless you are producting a great big wad of spit and flinging it at your child’s face.
My fav type of post is B and now you got me all hungry thinking about chocolate!
Thanks for the giveaway! (Wouldn’t want you to disqualify me for not adding that….LOL) Have a great weekend!

1.TACKY. I do not blog and I do not have some of the readers that are required and I do not have time to read all of their posts.
2.?. It depends on the prize. You should have to work harder for better prizes (like we are doing now).
3.TACKY. I like to think of myself as being a kind person, so I always try to thank the person holding the giveaway.
4.NO! I love the chance to win anything (well almost anything).
5.NO. Hey when your a mom, you do what you have to do so that your kids don’t look like homeless orphans!
As for your posts, I enjoyed reading all of them. Although I tend to lean towards the scarcastic ones, I love to see new recipes (especially with photos). With my family we do the same thing as you did with your aunt and uncle. We call around and try to get info without seeming to care about the situation.
I enjoyed jumping through hoops to get the chacne to win this prize. Thanks!

Tacky or Not?
1) This I do find tacky…but mainly because some giveaways are held by bad writers.
2) I’m wholeheartedly in favor of it.
3) Haha! Probably a good idea to encourage politeness (you are a mom, it’s part of the job description), although I’d recommend not requiring the exact words “Thank you for the giveaway.” Most people improvise a little.
4) Not at all! Unless it’s along the lines of “you poor giftless morons, let me give you some of my possessions to make it easier to clean my house and so I can feel superior to you, who are not giving but receiving”.
5) Eh, it’s a mom thing. My mom did it, I’ll do it, tacky or no–at some level it just doesn’t matter. You know the guy glaring at you is only remembering the time his mom did it…at his graduation.
Which type of post do you prefer?
A) Dear Sally, Grandma Thinks You’re Autistic, and She Can’t Stop Talking About It
