Last week I was reading one of my favorite group Mormon woman blogs, and halfway through the post I felt disturbed, betrayed, cheated. I’ve had a mild blog crush on Heather O. for a while now, and I just couldn’t believe she was using words like “conferences,” “continuing education,” “license,” “our patients,” and “graduate school.”
When all this time I thought she was JUST A MOMMY, just like me.
Of course it’s great if a woman I know is a lawyer or a professor or a proofreader, as long as I know about it going in. I mean, I might still be jealous, but at least I’m prepared.
The worst was when I found out my cousin-in-law Jana ran a marathon between her second and third kids who are 18 months apart in age. I didn’t even know she was a runner!
So if any of you lovely women have degrees or careers or extreme hobbies that you rarely talk about, please lead up to them slowly. I might need some time to adjust my worldview.
Comment of the day from Paula:
Well, I definitely use my BA in Archeology all the time, trying to unearth that missing shoe so someone has a complete pair! LOL…

Well, it’s nothing fancy, but I DO have an art degree (yes I use it) and I have a 1/2 career as a graphic designer/marketing coordinator at a CPA firm.
But more importantly: I got braces today at age 33. Top THAT!

Hey, I got braces too, last year! I’m getting them off in a month.
Ya… I don’t think I have any secret talents or accomplishments. No worries.

I have a BS in math. Yep. It surprises me, sometimes, too.

Well…uhm…
I have a degree in History and I’m a Product Manager for a dot com. I make wedding cakes for fun (is that extreme?)

Have I mentioned that I have a Masters Degree in Music Performance and a PhD in Nuclear Physics and am a world-renown brain surgeon? You totally knew these things about me, right?

Just a mom here. Current success? Getting the children through the day and safely into their beds. Current failure? My own health. Lovely. You are already ahead of me, sistah!

Hm, well, I found your blog through Dick’s in case you didn’t know, and I work in the same field as him. Both of your blogs sum up my life (except you’re different people living in a different country with more kids …). Anyway, I have an undergrad degree in Linguistics and Business German, and postgrad Diploma in Writing, Editing, and Publishing. I work full time for an IT company.
Extreme hobbies .. I guess scrapbooking doesn’t count as “extreme”, huh? Probably the most extreme has been my “hobby” of attending conferences overseas and leaving Miss M at home with her father for two weeks at a time! Or maybe that’s more pulling my heart out into little pieces and trying to compensate by buying cute stuff at Baby Gap (because that doesn’t exist down here). Oh, my one crazy thing that might count – we took Miss M to Europe with us for a 4-week holiday. 24 hours on a plane to London with an 18 month old who is not shy and can’t focus on the Wiggles long enough to sit still for more than 5 mins ..

I have a blossoming career as an IT recruiter, and before that I was an exec at an insurance firm, and before that part owner of an IT consulting firm. When my kids were younger, I worked A LOT, and traveled A LOT, and my husband was more in charge of the kids and household than I. Now my career has lead to a position that is much more flexible, right in my hometown, and does not require travel. I’m back in the mom seat, and very happy to be here. It’s perfect timing too, as my kids are now 12 and 16, and need a focused mom now more than ever.

I have a Masters Degree in Social Work, but I never use it. I only pull it out in emergencies, like if I need to show off how smart I am. Which is really lame, because it’s not exactly a Ph.D. in Physics, now is it>
