I’ve been cutting Dick’s hair for 10 years now, and I always cut the girls hair too. I look at hair as a work-in-progress: you can cut a little one day, cut some more the next. It’s always better to cut too little, of course, because more cutting is always just a snip away. For both Dick and the girls, it’s best to cut in front of the TV so they’re more likely to sit still.
After I shaved my head when I went to Europe at 19 (it was a spiritual being-born-again-type gesture), I’ve tried to let the experts (or, at least the semi-trained) do the cutting and the highlighting, though I admit I often slip and cut my own bangs. But now I’m trying to save money. So I grabbed the clippers and cut about 1 1/2 inches off. Then panicked and called for Dick to come straighten out the back.
He did a pretty good job, though I can see where a little more snipping would help. (Don’t know what to say about those dark roots — they are a little lighter after it’s completely dry).
Anyone have tips for teaching your husband some shaping or texturing techniques?

No tips. I am impressed that you did it. I have started cutting back. I always paid for the hair color. That is so expensive (especially with hubby out of work :0( I bought a box and colored my roots. Then bought a box for highlighting. My sister did the old fashion “pull the hair through the cap” and gave me highlights. Have to say, not too bad. Total cost for both boxes of color, about $17.00, instead of $50.00.
You are brave !
My stylist is inexpensive. If I go in with wet clean hair she cuts it for 12$.
I do buzz everybody else’s head, but they are all males.

Wow, that is one un-frumpy haircut! Looking good Jane. Now tell us who does your highlights. Wish I could see a little more of that pink shirt, it looks cute. I didn’t know you wore pink shirts.

[...] I’ve had several months to regret buzzing Spot’s hair. It made sense at the time, and she didn’t care. Not caring was probably why she cut her bangs off at the scalp in the first place. Several months is nothing, of course; I have spent years regretting the times I have cut my own hair. [...]
