Your analysis of the Kingdom is pretty insightful. I'm appreciating the movie more and more.

Awesome post, by the way. I love the way you write.

Hi Jane, A favorite preacher of mine showed me that a goodly part of the Bible is about the wilderness. Moses said, Come on, children, we're off to the promised land. Oh, and by the way, first we have to go through the wilderness. Elisha told Jehoram, I don't like you even a little bit, but since you have Jehosaphat as a friend, I'll fix it for you to defeat the Moabites, but first you have to go through the wilderness of Edom. Even David and Solomon had to bear their wildernesses. And don't at least most of the prophets talk about going through the wilderness (exile, military slaughter, etc) before God will bless them? That's the way God is, like it or not. Trying to blame our wilderness experiences wholly on our sins doesn't wash; there are too many innocents dying in fires, earthquakes, floods, tornados, abusive caretakers, etc. And all He asks of us is that we love Him above all else. I'll be 73 in a month and I'm not quite there yet. Love, Grampa

Marigold -- I like your metaphor of the filter. Your other points are great too. Thanks.

Susan -- There are quite a few movies that I really like when I watch them edited (not that I am SO opposed to R movies, that's more Dick), and then can't stand if I happen to see not-edited. Like 50 First Dates. That was really sweet edited.

Marianne -- I am hoping you are all safe from the tornadoes! Nothing like a natural disaster to make you reassess priorities, huh?

Laura -- Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Hope to get to know you better!

Gladis -- Thank you. I'm still hoping you see my return comments, as I can't reach you through email. Hope things are good for you in Florida!!

Nice blog. I just started reading it when I found you linked from Fussypants last week. Also appreciated your testimony. What you are doing is as significant as what Nadia is doing... and as significant as other mother's who came before us have done... it is the everyday that is life that shapes the world we live in.

I think we're all angst-y (if that can even be considered a word). It's a daily struggle to sacrifice yourself, your goals, your aspirations for those of your children.

At least, it is for me. Especially when I'm picking up the Legos for the fifth time.

I love them and cannot imagine doing anything else right now, like you said.

But.

The angst creeps in.

It's interesting that you just watched The Kingdom - so did we. I have a couple of siblings who live in Saudi Arabia and work for Aramco. I don't know if they have seen the movie or not - it would be interesting to get their take. They do say they feel more safe in Aramco housing than they do in the states.

BTW: We watched the unedited version, and it's very violent. In general, it's really not that great of a movie - violent, lots of profanity, mediocre acting - but it did make us think about the world around us.

You know, I think that your entire life experience filters (read: changes) how you portray everything, including the gospel, to your children. And it's not a bad thing, in fact, it is wonderful. They are learning about life and love and God through a mom who has lived a LOT in a small amount of time and brings a lot to the discussion. Whether you have angst or are content just shows that you're human. That you trust God is the example.
