I know there are some skeptics, and that even we true believers have doubts and concerns at times, but it’s such a comfort to travel anywhere in the world and find that it is exactly the same, with people of the same spirit and inclination and the same ritual and feeling present.
I’m talking, of course, about Walmart. I took the girls to the Payson, Utah Walmart today to buy a pumice stone for my cracked and bleeding heels. Sally could not stop pointing out all the similarities between this Walmart and our Bayway Supercenter in Florida: “Look, Mom, they even have the word Walmart on the handles of the carts, just like our Walmart” and “Wow, the milk is way in the back, just like at ours.” I nodded. Yes, it is comforting to know (or just another horrifying symptom of the absolute soulessness of our largest retailer) that Walmart is the same wherever you go.
In other news, Spot learned how to crawl at 6 pm on Monday, July 2, 2007. She had scooted, mostly backwards, for a couple days before that, but now she is off like a shot, as it were. And at only 8 months, 17 days and 3 hours. What a (content) prodigy! And Susan’s exaggerated inflections and eclectic diction are amusing everyone. “Um, yeah” is her response to almost any question. Unless it’s “No, no, no,” super loud, to the requests that I especially want her to agree with.

We went to Ohio last year for three weeks and went to Wal Mart for something. We thought that surely we would have the same Wal Mart experience there that we had in Oklahoma. But, no. We walked in and thought, “Look there are normal people that shop at this store.” Not to be mean to anyone that lives in Oklahoma but it is a whole different place than anywhere else I’ve lived (well, maybe not too different from Indiana). Anyway, while Wal Mart may be the same everywhere the shoppers sure aren’t, thus making the Wal Mart experience an interesting adventure no matter where you go.
The SuperWalmart in Palm Springs was a lot nicer, downright posh. And the other customers looked like they just walked off a movie set. Everythig was located in the same places. The one here in NM is just as lo-fi as the FL one, but everything is located backwards.
You know, it’s possible that Lucy is just biding her time. My mom always says that the quiet babies turn out to be the worst teenagers.
Just looked in Ali’s baby book. She didn’t crawl until 9 months! She hated her stomach so I was bad at making her do it. Zac loves his tummy and I’m sure he’ll crawl before too long.
I always thought it was hilarious that the Wal-Mart’s in Utah had LDS Book sections in them, but guess what? So, do the WM’s here in Mesa. Just makes me laugh.
I’m so glad to hear she’s crawling! That’s awesome. I wish I could have been there to see it. I’ve been waiting for her to take off for a few months now. Please don’t let her crawl into the pool.
I think Walmart just wants you to feel like your friendly neighborhood store no matter where you go. I know when I shopped in the in VA it was pretty much the same at the one here. I guess maybe so you dont have to ask any employees where anything is, you should really know by now right?
Thats great to hear about Lucy. I agree with what Marie said the quiet ones are the ones to watch out for in their teenage years. Not that I have any teenagers but the trouble makers in our household are the ones who do not talk all the much.
